"Lose yourself in generous service and every day can be a most unusual day, a triumphant day, an abundantly rewarding day!"
The burrito project is a very pure form of service, we go and make burritos and deliver them to homeless people. Being a part of such an impactful form of service shows people why service matter and the impact that it has on people. I learned that service, even the simple things can really make a difference in people’s lives.
On September 8th 2016 I did the burrito project where I made burritos and then delivered them to homeless people. I honestly think the activity was great. I loved it, the only thing I would say is it would be nicer if we had better directions on where to go to deliver the burritos. I realized through this experience that service really does help people, and that there are legitimately people that need and deserve the help. I was shown that people are inherently good and that everyone just makes mistakes. I’m glad that I was and still am able to help those in need. In this activity I was able to make burritos for homeless people and just after that I was able to go out and deliver it to them. I loved being able to do it with my friends, that made the experience that much better. I met an incredibly cool person that really showed me what service is about. He talked to me about his story and how he ended up homeless, his struggles, and his rise back up to where he is now almost out of homelessness. He also told me about his kid, saying he was his inspiration. The task I completed to help these homeless people is pretty simple and easy, but I was able to see it make a big difference in other people's lives. I learned that you don’t have to be an expert to help people, just the will to help and the motivation to do it make a huge difference. During the burrito project people all the time would ask for water, I hate saying that I don’t have any. I hope that someway we can figure out how to help these people by not only providing a little bit of food, but water as well.
